BUYER CHECKLIST

How to Evaluate an EA Before Buying It

A structured checklist for evaluating an MT5 Expert Advisor before purchase, with emphasis on evidence, risk controls, testing and transparency.

Start with the strategy description

You should be able to explain in plain language what the EA is trying to do. Identify the market, timeframe, entry idea, exit method, position sizing and any special filters. If the description focuses only on profits and does not explain how losses are controlled, you do not yet have enough information to evaluate the system.

Inspect historical evidence carefully

Look at the length of the available history, number of trades, drawdown and how results are distributed across time. A short period or tiny number of trades can create an attractive but fragile picture. Compare the strategy's stated method with the test settings and make sure the report does not hide important costs or unusual assumptions.

Understand the worst case

Ask what happens when the market moves against the system. Does it use a hard stop? Can positions accumulate? Is there a recovery mechanism? Can volume increase after losses? What happens if a trade remains open longer than expected? These questions are often more important than the best month shown on a chart.

Check broker compatibility

An EA may behave differently across brokers because symbol names, spreads, contract sizes, minimum volumes, stop levels and execution conditions vary. Confirm the exact symbol and timeframe requirements and test the system on the broker you intend to use. A product that works correctly in one environment may need different settings in another.

Look for operational details

Good documentation should explain installation, inputs, recommended testing, known limitations and how to stop the EA safely. Manual controls, logs and a visible dashboard can also make it easier to understand what the system is doing. Transparency does not guarantee performance, but it makes evaluation and troubleshooting much easier.

Make the final decision conservatively

An EA purchase should be treated like a software and risk-management decision, not a guaranteed investment. Use a demo or controlled environment first, monitor actual execution and keep the initial exposure small. Only increase risk after you have evidence that the system behaves as expected under your broker's conditions.

Practical note

This article is educational information, not investment advice. Trading financial markets involves risk, and historical or simulated results do not guarantee future performance.
