How to Install an EA on MT5

A step-by-step guide to installing a MetaTrader 5 Expert Advisor, enabling automated trading, checking inputs and preparing a controlled demo test.

Before installation

Get the EA from its legitimate source and read its installation instructions first. Confirm the supported MetaTrader 5 version, symbols, timeframe requirements, account type and any broker-specific notes. Avoid installing software from unknown sources. For a purchased MQL5 product, use the MetaTrader Market installation process associated with the account that owns the product.

Attach the EA to a chart

Open MetaTrader 5 and locate the Expert Advisor in the Navigator panel. Open the symbol and timeframe required by the EA, then attach the EA to the chart. MetaTrader will display the EA settings before it starts. Check the inputs carefully rather than accepting every default automatically. If the product is designed for XAUUSD M1, for example, attaching it to an unrelated symbol or timeframe may produce behaviour that was never intended by its developer.

Allow automated trading

MetaTrader 5 has platform-level controls that can allow or prevent automated trading. If the EA requires automated trading, make sure the platform permission is enabled and that the EA's own status indicates it is running. A permission icon or status indicator may vary with the terminal version and configuration. If the EA does not trade, first check the Experts and Journal tabs for a clear reason before changing strategy settings.

Review the inputs

Start with conservative settings and understand what each major input controls. Risk percentage, fixed lot size, stop-loss and take-profit values, spread limits, trading sessions and news filters can materially change results. Never assume that a setting used by another trader is appropriate for your account. Record your starting configuration so you can reproduce the same test later.

Run a demo forward test

A demo test is useful because it exposes the EA to the actual broker's symbol naming, spread behaviour, execution rules and server timing without putting live capital at immediate risk. Watch whether orders are opened and closed as expected, whether spreads block trades, and whether the EA behaves correctly after terminal restarts. A meaningful forward test should be long enough to observe different market conditions rather than only a handful of trades.

Common installation problems

If nothing happens, check that the chart symbol and timeframe are correct, automated trading is permitted, the EA is actually attached, the market is open, and the Journal or Experts log does not show an error. Also check whether the broker uses a suffix or prefix such as XAUUSD.a. Some systems require exact symbol handling. Avoid repeatedly changing settings before identifying the actual cause of the problem.
